Stem Cell Treatment for Angina

Stanford Hospital & Clinics is currently participating in a new study evaluating an investigational treatment involving autologous CD34+ stem cells.

Researchers hope to learn whether a patient’s own CD34+ stem cells can reduce the number of angina episodes in patients who have CCS class III or IV chronic refractory angina.

What Does the Study Involve?

Patients who are successfully enrolled into the study will visit our office approximately 13 times over approximately 14-months, which includes a 12 month follow up period after treatment. The study will require an initial medical history and physical exam. During the course of the study, cardiac diagnostic procedures along with blood tests will be performed. Most study visits will range in length from 2 to 4 hours.

To qualify for this study a patient must meet the following criteria:

21 Years of age or older
CCS functional class III or IV chronic refractory angina
Attempted “best” medical therapy
Considered unsuitable for conventional revascularization
Able to walk on an exercise tolerance treadmill following a modified Bruce Protocol
Left ventricular ejection fraction > or = to 25% by ECHO or SPECT at screening
