Stanford is one of the nation’s leading centers for the care of people with epilepsy, encompassing basic science research on mechanisms of epilepsy and also clinical care of people with seizure disorders. The center is nationally known for its expertise in both the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.
Stanford has pioneered work in the area of non-epileptic seizures (NES) that often mimic epilepsy, and is also studying innovative methods to treat patients with intractable seizures, such as electrical stimulation of the brain to treat uncontrolled seizures.
The Center follows about 2,000 adult patients with seizures, 1,500 pediatric epilepsy patients, and performs consultations on many more. Each year, about 500 adults and children with seizure disorders are admitted to Stanford Hospital & Clinics.
Pediatric patients are admitted to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, adjacent to Stanford Hospital & Clinics. Our staff performs surgery on approximately 30 patients per year in order to treat their epilepsy.
