Stanford Spine experts at Stanford Spine practice in the context of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary spine center.

In addition to spine neurosurgeons, a pain anesthesiologist, rehabilitation psychiatrist, and a neuropsychiatrist manage surgical and nonsurgical disorders of the spine and peripheral nerves.

Our medical staff treats diseases of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine with minimally invasive endoscopic or laser techniques facilitated by an innovative, computer-guided imaging system developed here at Stanford.

Patients receive these procedures on an outpatient basis or with a brief hospital stay. In either situation, minimally invasive surgery reduces postsurgical pain and promotes faster recovery.

Spinal Surgery

Stanford surgeons and researchers have made significant improvements in the surgical treatment of spinal cord and spine tumors using intraoperative monitoring, computer-assisted surgical navigation systems, and microsurgical techniques developed in our Radiosurgery and Image Guidance laboratories.

These techniques include:

  • Endoscopic anterior lumbar interbody fusion
  • Thoracic endoscopic sympathectomy and discectomy
  • Lumbar microendoscopic discectomy (for treating herniated discs)
  • Cranio-vertebral junction reconstructive surgery (for tumors and rheumatoid arthritis)
  • Surgical treatment of spinal cord and spinal tumors
  • Complex reconstructive spinal instrumentation (for trauma and congenital disease)

Spine Tumor Radiosurgery

Radiosurgery is a technique in which narrow, focused beams of radiation are used to destroy tumors without harming the surrounding healthy tissue.

The CyberKnife radiosurgery system delivers high-dose precision radiation directly to cancers of the spine in an outpatient setting.

The CyberKnife, developed at Stanford, has been used for patient treatment since 1994.
