Our Team |
Stanford offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of neurological disorders. Our team includes the following members:
Primary care physicians Your primary care physician is your first point of contact with the health care system. He or she will coordinate your care by consulting with Stanford's specialists, and with you and your family.
Neurologists Neurologists diagnose and treat diseases of the nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, and blood vessels that supply them. Neurologists often perform and interpret diagnostic tests related to the central or peripheral nervous system or muscles.
Neurosurgeons Neurosurgeons specialize in surgery of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems, including their supporting structures and vascular supply. Neurosurgeons may also evaluate and treat pathological processes that modify the function or activity of the nervous system, and are often involved in finding surgical or nonsurgical solutions for pain management.
Neuroradiologists Neuroradiologists are physicians who have received specialty training in various radiology techniques to diagnose problems with the nervous system. These methods include X-rays, computerized tomography (CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and others.
Neuroanesthesiologists Neuroanesthesiologists perform anesthesia during neurosurgery and work with the surgeon to monitor and manage a variety of patient physiological functions prior to, during, and after surgery. This demanding field entails knowledge of cerebrovascular physiology, complex pharmacological approaches, and detailed patient monitoring including electroencephalogram and evoked responses.
Neuropsychologists Neuropsychologists provide assessment and diagnosis of the cognitive and behavioral effects of neurological disorders including head injury, cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, brain tumors, and epilepsy, as well as learning disabilities and attention deficit disorder. Services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, and may involve neuropsychological and personality tests, review of records, and interviews with patients and their families.
Psychiatrists Psychiatrists work with patients and their families to address the psychological issues that arise in the sometimes stressful process of diagnosing and treating neurological disease.
EEG Technologists EEG technologists perform electroencephalography, which is a record of the brain’s electrical activity.
Nurses Registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses assess and coordinate patient needs, administer treatment, and provide instruction to patients and their families.
Nursing assistants Nursing assistants provide personal care and hygiene.
Rehabilitation therapists Physical, occupational, and speech therapists provide individualized rehabilitation treatment.
Social workers Social workers offer counseling to patients and families regarding financial concerns, local lodging, community resources, psychological and emotional support, or home-care problems. They also conduct a variety of patient support groups and classes in coping skills for patients and their families.
Case managers Case managers coordinate a wide range of services, including assistance with insurance, referrals, test scheduling, and home care.
Dieticians Dieticians help develop an optimal plan for nutritional and caloric intake.
Clinic managers The clinic manager is responsible for the overall operation of the clinic, and supervises the clinical and administrative staff.
Medical assistants Medical assistants help physicians by measuring patients' weight, blood pressure, and temperature, and maintaining daily patient records.
Administrative personnel All of our personnel are concerned about neurology patients. They will help with scheduling appointments and tests, completing insurance forms, and obtaining authorization records. If they can't answer your questions, they'll direct you to the appropriate person.
