Led by one of the country’s most prominent practitioners and researchers in minimal access (laparoscopic) surgery, MYRIAM CURET, the Section of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Stanford University offers both traditional (open) and laparoscopic surgical approaches to adult patients with a wide range of gastrointestinal surgical problems.

Many of the surgeons at Stanford University offer basic laparoscopy, including laparoscopic removal of gallbladders (cholecystectomy) and appendixes (appendectomy). Diagnostic laparoscopy and laparoscopic repair of incisional hernias are also routinely offered by most of the surgical staff. In addition, Dr. Myriam Curet and her partner, Dr. John Morton performs many advanced laparoscopic surgical cases including:

• Inguinal hernia repairs
• Splenectomies (removal of spleen)
• Surgery for gastroesophageal reflux disease (Nissen fundoplication)
• Intestinal (bowel) resections
• Adrenalectomies (removal of adrenal gland)
• Repair of paraesophageal hernias
• Biopsy of intraabdominal tumors
• Bariatric surgery

Drs. Curet and Morton will also resect cancers laparoscopically in select patients. And they perform reoperative abdominal surgery through a laparoscopic approach whenever that is feasible. Both Dr. Curet and Dr. Morton have additional training in minimally invasive surgery and they have each performed thousands of advanced laparoscopic cases. They are nationally recognized as leaders in the field of minimally invasive surgery both clinically and through their research projects.
