MARIN DANCE THEATRE HOLIDAY BALLET Sophie & the Enchanted Toyshop, a Holiday Ballet The Marin Dance Theatre presents “Sophie and the Enchanted Toyshop,” for Stanford Hospital’s Annual Holiday Ballet. An original production showcasing more than three dozen youthful dancers, ages 12 to 20, the performers look forward to coming to Stanford Hospital says MDT director Margaret Swarthout. “I think children like to give if you give them the right situation, the chance to do something for others mirrors the theme of the dance.” A little girl who has been given a gift gives it away to another child, and, taken with that kindness, a toymaker takes her on a journey, passing through the Land of Snows to his magical, enchanted toyshop.
The sets recall the Charles Dickens Victorian era and the music is among the most enduring and endearing, drawn from the work of Strauss, Rossini, Saint-Saens and Resphigi. Also included will a very well-known piece of music - the waltzing “Ice Skaters” - composed by Emile Waldteufel, whose music entertained Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace.
The one-time performance is free and open to all patients, staff & visitors. Attendees, especially children, will love the dancer’s style, skill and costumes.
Friday, December 5 at 12:30pm VANDIVIER Contemporary Jazz Rick Vandivier is a guitarist who has found inspiration in influences that stretch from Andres Segovia to Pat Metheny to Jimi Hendrix. His performances are daring, soulful, and evocative. In a concert review, Jean Bartlett (Pacifica Tribune; March 2004) wrote: “the amazing guitar licks provided by Vandivier cultivated a whole new threshold of wow… Vandivier opened the show with a piece which galloped the triumphant poetry of Madrid while caressing the edges of Segovia, Feliciano and Montoya. Extraordinary musicianship with plenty of sweets…” Rick has been performing and recording in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last 25 years.
