Show No Mercy? The Ethics of Access to Experimental and Novel Treatments

Should terminally ill adults and children have a right to experimental and innovative drugs, devices, vaccines, and surgeries? A lawsuit brought by the Abigail Alliance seeks to create just such a right by weakening the regulatory authority of the FDA. How should the needs and desires of individuals and their families to try 'last ditch' treatments for cancer, Parkinsonism, AIDS, ALS, and other terrible maladies be balanced against society's interest in proving treatments safe and effective?

Speaker: Arthur L. Caplan, PhD, Emmanuel and Robert Hart Professor of Bioethics Chair, Department of Medical Ethics, Director, Center for Bioethics University of Pennsylvania
